Government Sites with Porn on them

The Porn sites are up to no good again. I always wonder if it is a webmaster-gone-bad or a hacker, but here are a couple government sites currently being taken advantage of.
CA.GOV (10,000 pages of porn)
BURBANKIL.GOV (13,000 pages of porn)

Why do they target GOV, you ask? GOV websites are thought to (and probably does) have more power in google’s eyes than a normal .com, .net, and .org. The reason google accepts a GOV site as more credible is because not everyone has access to them… just their employees, oh, and hackers.
There are more, but I won’t release them right now.

Google’s Overzealous Badware Filter

I’ve run across a couple sites that, after some in depth checking, should not be receiving Google’s “Badware” filter warning.  This filter, which can be found here, http://www.google.com/interstitial?url=http://www.livedigitally.com/  warns people who are about to visit the website from a Google results page.

LiveDigitally.com, while detailed as a badware site, is almost certainly not.  What does that mean?  Google doesn’t send them traffic (it stops at the interstital loading page) and they don’t cache your site.  They do show similar pages.  Here is a sample of the pages google finds similar to this “Badware” site…  WordPress.org, The-Gageteer.com, SlingMedia.com.  Now *that* is bad company.. right.

A Google display item that has always puzzled me

Here is something I’ve always wondered…  Why does Google display the size of the page in its results?  You know, the little number next to the url (42k, 28k, etc).. of course you do.  What purpose does this serve the general public? Or anyone for that matter…  (Yeah, yeah, Page size- SEO got it.. doesn’t really effect anything).

$500+ per share increase and nobody has changed that to something more useful?

Google Failure? Search Wrestling Shoes.

Alright. Lets get this out of the way quick. I’m not complaining about someone else’s success, I think its great for them. Anyway, run over to Google right now, a switch occurred in the SERPs and I noticed a couple things, both of which have been there for months, but their raising in rank prompted this post.

WrestlingGear.com is the #1 & 2 results. Move to the middle of the page, and you will see WrestlingShoes.com. This site is owned, operated, and contains the exact same products, links to WrestlingGear in 90% of its pages, and yet remains as a result in the top 10. Why does this matter? Good question reader!

Building Your Own Link Network

Here is a quick thought for everyone.

Create a basic .html file that includes a list of all of the links you would like to display.  Create an array for each URL weighting when it will be viewed (how frequently) and the # of links to display per page (this can be set separately on each originating page).  If you have a 10,000 page catalog, you don’t want to have 15 links showing on every page- its obvious your goal is to receive links from your other web properties.  Instead, display a random rotation of 15-20 links (to deeper parts of your sites, too)

Target Misspellings

Haven’t been on for a while and thought I’d toss one out there for everyone to chew on…  Zappos = Zappo to the person unfamiliar with the inner workings of their company.  Target common misspellings (like this), in your organic search practices.

- eharmoney (rather than eHarmony)

- gregs list (rather than Craigs List..)

There is some value in this, its up to you how much.

College Wrestling Rankings, Results, and more..

I’ve been playing around with this wrestling forum called TheWrestlingTalk.com… I host them, and manage the site, kind of took it on as a summer hobby.  Now that the summer is ending, and wrestling season is beginning, the forum is actually really coming to life.  Its been a lot of fun getting all of the tools online for these guys and hopefully we will see some more results very soon!  They cover College, High School Wrestling, Freestyle & Greco, as well as talking a ton about absolutely nothing related to wrestling.

Projects, Projects, and More… Projects

I’ve been up to my neck in projects both on, and offline…. I haven’t died, but the blog takes a back seat whenever we take on new large clients.  In the last month and a half, we have added 25 new affiliate programs that are actively generating revenue, along with a new partnership blossoming with one of the Olympic sports.  We are creating many different tool sets for them, and the process has been a great time.

So You Want to Run an Affiliate Mall

You’ve built a fairly large portfolio of websites you market for. Many of them offer coupons, and you want to join them together. This concept allows you to combine all of your offers in one gathering place, easier for your prospective buyers to find. They can compulsively buy with much greater ease.

What Affiliate Programs Should I Pick?

I get asked this question at least three times a day, but I finally decided to answer one fellows e-mail as a blog post to save myself from having to e-mail back on all of them.  Chris C. From Ohio writes:
“  I’m just starting out making my own sites.  I’m past the basics, and I understand all the 101 stuff of how everything works.  What I need now is a focused idea.  Can you make a suggestion of an affiliate site(s) that I can create?  I’d really love some direction, and if I take it and make money I’ll send you a consulting fee!…;-)  ”
